Architect John Howey private contemporary home in Tampa Florida Hyde Park neighborhood with photos, video

October 30, 2016

November 13, Sunday, from 1-4 I will host the Herron House for its owners during the Sarasota Architectural Foundation's MOD Weekend, honoring Sarasota School of Architecture legend Victor Lundy. The Herron House has been beautifully restored by Ursula Kohl and Peter Bartos, who use this mid-century architectural icon as their cherished private island home.

The Herron House is, to me, the essence of Victor Lundy's work in Florida, and is often used to illustrate his mid-century period. In 1962, LOOK Magazine wrote about the Herron House and its architect and published a number of vintage photos, including these - by Phillip Harrington.

Ursula Kohl and Peter Bartos have been renovating and restoring projects in Europe and SW Florida for over 25 years, from large city buildings to small architectural gems. SEE EXAMPLES HERE

I have the honor of helping them buy and sell many of their Florida properties, including the Castile House, the Cooney House, a Sarasota mid-century modern gem and one of Ursula and Peter's favorites, Manasota Beach House, a Bauhaus-inspired modern property with beautiful contemporary finishes. It is ready for a modern architecture lover like YOU to move right in. Please contact me privately at 941.724.1118 to learn more about it.

The Sarasota School of Architecture 1941-1966 by John Howey

If you are a fan of architecture, this book belongs in your library. The Sarasota School of Architecture 1941-1966 by John Howey, Princeton Architectural Press (1997) explores the talented, idealistic architects who were drawn to the Gulf Coast of Florida, and left a legacy of influential mid-century modern houses, churches, schools and commercial buildings in the Sarasota, Florida area. Mr Howey introduces us to Paul RudolphRalph Twitchell, Philip Hiss, Mark Hampton, Victor Lundy, Gene Leedy,Tim Seibert, Bert Brosmith, Jack West, Carl Abbott, Frank Folsom Smith, William Zimmerman, Ralph Zimmerman, William Rupp and others who contributed to this important architectural movement.

Author and Architect John Howey lives in Tampa, Florida and continues his practice at John Howey & Associates.

Here is a recent photo I took during a visit with Mr Howey at Bay Villa Place, one of his award-winning projects (1978 AIA Tampa Award), in the Hyde Park area of Tampa, Florida, 2016.  - Enjoy!  -Martie
